The MFA course (Medical First Aid) is a 5-day mandatory course for deck & engine cadets to sail as officers, DG Shipping approved structured course, which aims at preparing seafarers to provide medical first aid by Section A-VI/4 Para 1 to 3 and Table A-VI/4-1 of the STCW Code. The main purpose of this course is to provide the student with the knowledge and skills in First Aid to take immediate action in the case of an accident or illness likely to occur on board a ship. Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of:

  • Immediate action and emergency response procedures. 
  • First Aid Kit on board.
  • Body structure and functions. 
  • Toxicological hazards aboard ships.
  • Examination of patients.
  • Spinal injuries, Burns, scalds, and effects of heat and cold.

Eligibility for MFA Course

To attend the MFA Course, you need to clear all of the points mentioned below. 

  1. Sea Service Requirement
    • Must have 6 months sea service with approved Pre-sea Training .
  2. Prerequisite Training 
    • Must have successfully completed the Basic course Elementary First Aid (EFA).
  3. Medical Fitness
  • E – Learning Requirement 

As per DG Shipping Guidelines, candidates can only appear for the final examination (Exit Exam/Institute Exam) after successfully completing the E-Learning Module of the course.

The MFA course equips seafarers with essential knowledge and skills required for handling medical emergencies on board ships. The training covers:

  1. Immediate Action
    • Revises important aspects of the Elementary First Aid training course.
  2. First Aid Kit
    • Describes and lists the contents of the first aid kit required by national regulations.
  3. Body Structure and Functions
    • Uses a chart, dummy, human body or other suitable medium, such as audio-visual aids, to describe and explain the structure of the human body and functions of the important parts and systems.
  4. Toxicological Hazards Aboard Ship
    • States that there are important regulations to be observed for the transport of dangerous cargo aboard ship as required by the IMO/IMDG Code.
    • Applies first aid measures in accordance with Medical First Aid Guide for use in Accidents Involving dangerous goods (MFAG).
  5. Examination of a Patient
    • Makes detailed observations of a casualty, based on medical precepts.

1. E-Learning Requirements for MFA Exit Exam

  • Minimum Study Hours: 15 hours
  • Passing Marks: 60%

2. Steps to Complete E-Learning:

  • Visit the DG Shipping website and access the e-learning portal.
  • Click on Modular Courses, enroll in MFA, and log in with face verification.
  • Complete the required e-learning hours and attempt the assessment exam.
  • Upon passing, candidates become eligible for 6-day classroom training at a DG Shipping-approved MTI.
  • After classroom training, candidates must take the Exit Exam on the DG Shipping website.

  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Passing Marks: 15

How to Download MFA Course Certificate?

  • After completing E-Learning, Offline Training, and Exit Exam, the MTI generates the STCW MFA certificate.

What is the MFA Certificate Validity?
