HVO Course Description
The 5-day High Voltage Safety and Switch Gear – Operational Level (HV-O) course is mandatory for Operational Level Engineer Officers. To enhance competency in high voltage systems, Maritime Training Institutes (MTIs) are directed to restructure the 6-day course so that all operational-level requirements are covered on Day 1. This allows Engineer Officers to complete their training and receive the Course Completion Certificate (Annex-4) on the first day, as outlined in Annexes 1 to 3.
Eligibility for HV-O Course
To attend the HV-O Course, you must clear all the points mentioned below.
- Marine Engineering officers/trainees who have completed an approved pre-sea training course for GME / DME / ATS or B.E.(Marine).
- Electro-Technical Ratings (ETR) with sea time not less than 6 months.
- Educational Qualification
- As per DG Shipping Guidelines, candidates can only appear for the final examination (Exit Exam/Institute Exam) after completing the E-Learning Module of the course
Documents Required for HV-O Course
To apply for the HV-O course, you need a list of documents such as:
- INDoS Id
- CDC with proof of sea service.
- Valid Medicals by a D.G. Shipping Approved Doctor (Click here for the list of DGS Approved Doctors)
- A valid passport
HV-O Course Details
The HV-O course equips seafarers with essential topics:
- Introduction, Safety briefing and objectives of the course.
- The learner knows the arrangement and protection of high voltage installations on board vessels.
- Need for High voltage safety rules and procedures.
- Requirement of modern vessels which are equipped with high voltage generators and distribution systems.
- Statutory regulations & requirements for high voltage systems on marine and offshore applications.
- Difference between insulated & earthed neutral distribution system and function of the protection devices and their sequence of operation in a high voltage distribution system.
- Electrical Hazards associated with high voltage systems. E.g. electrical shock, arc flash and arc blast.
- Arrangement of high voltage switches room equipment and associated equipment.
- Practices and PPE requirements.
- Competent person and authorized personnel to carry out maintenance and repair and permits.
- Operational and safety features associated with high voltage electrical hazards, including

Complete Process for HV-O Exit Exam
1. E-Learning Requirements for HV-O Exit Exam
- Minimum Study Hours: 6 hours
- Passing Marks: 50%
2. Steps to Complete E-Learning:
- Visit the DG Shipping website and access the e-learning portal.
- Click on Modular Courses, enroll in HV-O, and log in with face verification.
- Complete the required e-learning hours and attempt the assessment exam.
- Upon passing, candidates become eligible for 6-day classroom training at a DG Shipping-approved MTI.
- After classroom training, candidates must take the Exit Exam on the DG Shipping website.
3. HV-O Exit Exam Details
- Total Questions: 30
- Duration: 30 minutes
- Passing Marks: 15
- Marks per Question: 1

- After completing E-Learning, Offline Training, and Exit Exam, the MTI generates the STCW HV-O certificate.
