GMDSS Course Description
GMDSS stands for Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. The 17-day DG Shipping approved course aims to the required Knowledge, Competence & Skill to operate a GMDSS system used while the ship is in Distress for communication and relaying the Distress messages. GMDSS course is mandatory for Deck Cadets appearing for their 2nd Mate FG Exams at MMDs.
The course is designed to meet the requirements of the provisions of the STCW & SOLAS Convention and issue required GMDSS Certificate of Competency (COC) and endorsements.

GDMSS Course Eligibility
To attend the GMDSS Course, you need to clear all of the points mentioned below.
- 12th with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (or) Cadets intending to attend for 2nd Mates examination (or) Nautical Officer holding COC (or) Radio Officer with Certificate of Proficiency.
- Candidates need to be above 18 years old.
- INDoS number is mandatory

GMDSS Course Details
The duration of the course is forty (40) hours and the required training is to be completed in five (5) days. The theory part is twenty (20) hours and the practical is twenty (20) hours. The training covers:-
- Transmit and receive information using GMDSS subsystems and equipment and fulfilling the functional requirements of GMDSS.
- Knowledge of the basic features of the maritime mobile service and maritime mobile satellite service.
- Elementary knowledge of frequencies and frequency bands
- Types of stations in the Maritime Mobile and Maritime Mobile Satellite Service.
- General Principles and Basic Features of the Maritime Mobile and Maritime Mobile Satellite Service.
- Detailed practical knowledge and ability to use the basic equipment of a ship station.
- Knowledge of and ability to use in practice the basic equipment of a ship station.
- Preventive measures for the safety of the ship and connection with hazards related to radio equipment, including electrical and no ionizing radiation hazards
- Practical and theoretical knowledge of general communication procedures.
- Ability to use the English language both written and spoken for the satisfactory exchange of communications relevant to life at sea.

Complete Process for GMDSS Exam
1. GMDSS Exam Part 1 – Written Examination
- Technical Theory, Radio Regulations and SOLAS
- On successful completion of Part I the candidate is eligible to appear for Part II exams.
2. GMDSS Exam Part 2 –
- Log-Keeping, Practical, Orals, Commercial Working (Log keeping), VHF Transceiver & MF/HF Transceiver, Safety equipment ( VHF DSC, MF/HF DSC, NAVTEX, EPIRB, SART & GMDSS Survival Craft Walkie-talkies), Simulator Exercises (SAT-B, SAT-C, FLEET-77).
- The GMDSS Part II results are announced on the last day of the exam and Provisional Certificate is issued by Ministry of Communication on the same day.
How to Download GMDSS GOC Certificate?
- GMDSS (GOC) may be obtained through online application to respective Mercantile Marine Departments through the e-governance portal of the Directorate General of Shipping by submitting required documents and fees.
What is the GMDSS Certificate Validity?
- The GMDSS STCW certificate is valid for a lifetime.
