It meets the advanced training requirements under Section A-V/4 of the STCW Convention and Table A-V/4-2 of the STCW Code, following IMO Model Course 7.11. The course prepares officers to safely operate ships in polar regions, focusing on ice navigation, risk management, environmental protection, and emergency response in extreme conditions. Eligibility for APW Course

To attend the APW Course, you need to clear all of the points mentioned below. 

  1. Participants must hold a valid Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Master, Chief Mate, or Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch, in accordance with STCW Convention regulations II/1, II/2, or II/3, issued or recognized by the Government of India.
  2. Participants must also possess a Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) in Basic Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters.

 E-Learning Requirement:-

  • As per DG Shipping Guidelines, candidates can only appear for the final examination (Exit Exam/Institute Exam) after successfully completing the E-Learning Module of the course.

The APW course equips seafarers with essential topics to ensure safe operations on ships Operating in Polar Waters. The training covers:

  • Interpret the basic requirements for structure, stability, subdivision, machinery, life-saving appliances, fire protection, voyage planning, ship routing, and navigation systems on IGF Code-compliant ships.
  • Understand the basic chemistry and physics related to the safe bunkering of fuels used on board IGF Code ships.
  • Gain knowledge of the design, systems, and operational characteristics of ships using IGF fuels.
  • Learn proper procedures for the bunkering, storage, and securing of IGF fuels.
  • Understand safety and control systems for managing bunkering operations and boil-off gas supply to the engines.
  • Perform essential measurements and calculations related to IGF fuel operations.
  • Apply correct emergency procedures in case of spills or leaks of IGF fuels.
  • Operate and interpret data from gas monitoring and detection systems and associated instruments.
  • Develop safety instructions for tank entry and hot work, based on comprehensive risk assessments.
