The Radar Observer Simulator Course (ROSC, is a 10-day mandatory certification for individuals seeking to work as officers in charge of a navigational watch. ROSC course provides training in the basic theory and use of radar for officers in charge of a navigational watch and is based on the standards of competence as per Section A-II/1 of STCW 95.
A candidate who completes the ROSC course and meets the required standards will know when to use radar, how to choose the right mode and range, how to adjust the settings for best performance, and understand what radar can and cannot do.

Eligibility for ROS Course
To attend the ROS Course, you must clear all the points mentioned below.
- Navigating Officers, Pilots, or Cadets need 3 months of pre-sea training and 9 months at sea. Cadets can also qualify with 18 months at sea, while others need 24 months of sea service.
- INDoS Number is mandatory.

The ROS course equips seafarers with essential knowledge and skills required for safe liquefied gas tanker operations. The training covers:
- Fundamental theory Hours Hours Hours, Fundamental principles of radar, Magnetic compass safe distances, Radiation hazards and precautions, Characteristics of radar sets, External factors affecting radar detection, Factors which might cause faculty interpretation.
- The relative motion triangle, CPA and TCPA, Speed and aspect of targets, Reporting a target, Set and drift of current, Action taken by target, Action taken by own ship, Predict action to take by own ship.
- The basic difference between Relative Plot & True Plot, Basic difference between Sea-stabilized True Plot & Ground-stabilized True Plot, Courses & speeds of targets, aspect, action taken by targets directly from display, CPA & TCPA by the construction of the relative triangle.t
- The use of radar for position fixing, Aids radar navigation including Racon, Ramark, SART & AIS, and Parallel indexing techniques in radar navigation.
- Importance of good lookout and frequent plotting, Factors affecting safe speed, Good plotting and avoidance of close quarters situations, Substantial actions to avoid close quarters situations, and Use of Radar in various situations.

Complete the Process for the ROS Exam
At the end of the course, there shall be an assessment as follows:
- Plotting examination on paper with 70% as pass marks.
- Written examination on theory, operation, and interpretation with 50% as pass marks.
- Practical examination of the operation of Radar and Oral on ROR.

What is the ROS Certificate Validity?
- The STCW certificate is valid indefinitely.
- To apply for a DCE certificate, update profile details (passport, CDC, etc.) on the Indos portal.
- The DCE certificate is system-generated and available within 3-15 days through the Indos CoP Checker.
