OCTCO/OCTO Course In Mumbai
OCTCO is an acronym for Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Tankers Cargo Operations. It is the minimum level of training established by STCW Regulation V/1-1 for many types of seafarers who will have specific duties related to cargo/cargo equipment on oil and chemical tankers.
When a person becomes a crew member on an oil or chemical tanker or will have any responsibility for cargo watching, cargo operations or cargo equipment, he/she must have OCTCO training (both officers and ratings).
In addition, in Indian waters, OCTCO training is required to permit a “Basic/Level 1” qualification for cargo tankers and is referred to as a Basic Certificate of Compliance (DCE terminology).
The focus of the OCTCO training course will include basic training on:
* The tanker’s safety culture, including awareness of the risks associated with loading and transporting toxic, flammable, contaminating and damaging substances;
Understanding the basic responsibilities involved in transporting a hazardous substance (including loading and discharging);
Methods to prevent the release of hazardous substances into water and the workplace while conducting safe and responsibly managing cargo operations on tankers.

Eligibility requirement for OCTCO/OCTO
Because OCTCO/OCTO is a “Basic” tanker course, eligibility is easier to establish:
- Minimum Qualification (Must)
You need to be a seafarer with valid INDoS and eligible to sail.
2) Basic Safety Training (Usually required)
Most institutes require you to have BST completed, as per DG Shipping admission rules followed by MTIs.
3) Medical Fitness
This is compulsory. You must be medically fit: A DG Shipping approved medical fitness certificate is a must. The vision and hearing should be to the required standard.
5) Sea Service (Not required for OCTCO)
The OCTCO course is a basic training course, and thus chemical/oil tanker sea service is not required for admission.
Documents requirement for OCTCO/OCTO
Following is the list of documents that you should have ready when applying for admission to OCTCO / OCTO so your admission is not delayed:
- INDoS number/INDoS certificate
- Valid Medical Fitness Certificate issued by a DG Shipping-approved doctor
- CDC and/or Passport (if applicable)
- BST certificates when required by the institute.
- Passport-size photographs- as required by the institute
