Eligibility for OCTCO/OCTO Course

Since the OCTCO/OCTO is a Basic Tanker Course, the eligibility criteria for admission are much less than for Other Courses:

1-MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED): To apply to the course you must be a sailor with a valid INDoS and endorsed to sail.

2-BASIC SAFETY TRAINING (USUALLY REQUIRED): Most training institutions require that you have completed BST, in accordance with the DG Shipping Admission Rules implemented by MTIs.

3-MEDICAL FITNESS: Medical fitness is required. You must have an approved medical certificate from DG Shipping. You will also need to have normal eyesight and hearing that meet DG Shipping requirements.

5-SEA SERVICE (NOT REQUIRED FOR THE OCTCO COURSE): Since the OCTCO Course is a Basic Training Course, no chemical/oil tanker sea service experience is required for admission.

Documents requirement for OCTCO/OCTO

Before you can start your OCTCO/OCTO course at a maritime training institution, you will generally be required to submit certain documents.

  • This includes a current Indian Passport (including copies).
  • If you have previous seagoing experience, you will be required to submit a Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC).
  • You will be required to have completed a full medical fitness examination by a doctor registered with the Directorate General of Shipping and provide a copy of this.
  • You will be required to submit 2 – 4 passport-sized colour photographs in formal uniform.

NOTE: If you have your details and certificates, fully updated in your Seafarer Profile, you may not require any additional supporting documents for your application.

ZASHA Institute of Maritime Studies, Dehradun

The best thing about ZASHA is that it has been approved as a Maritime Training Institute (MTI No. 105016) by DG Shipping. This is significant because the term “maritime institute” does not carry much weight if it is not part of the list of DG-approved training centers. Candidates from Uttarakhand, UP, Haryana, Himachal, and other neighboring states have the added advantage of being able to quickly and affordably complete their STCW courses at ZASHA, as opposed to traveling to an expensive major metropolitan area. ZASHA is a very popular choice for candidates who are located in Uttarakhand or other northern areas in India, who want to avoid the long and expensive travel to Mumbai or Chennai to take their STCW courses.

HSNA Maritime Education and Research, with campuses in Lucknow and Varanasi (AIIMT), is a D.G. Shipping-approved institute known for its “A1 Outstanding” rating. It provides essential STCW Basic Modular Courses like BST and STSDSD, alongside specialized training such as OCTCO (Oil/Chemical Tanker), LGTF, and Passenger Ship Familiarization.

The institute also offers Advanced Courses (AFF, PSCRB, MFA) and Competency Programs like MEO Class II and Chief Mate. Equipped with modern simulators, smart classrooms, and a survival pool, HSNA is a key alternative for seafarers in the Uttar Pradesh region
