The BPW course (Basic Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters) is a mandatory 5-day program specifically designed for Masters and Deck Officers. It aims to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for training and qualification of officers serving on ships operating in polar waters, as outlined in Section A-V/4 of the STCW Convention and Table A-V/4-1 of the STCW Code.

Eligibility for BPW Course
To attend the BPW Course, you need to clear all of the points mentioned below.
- Certified Officers
- Hold a valid Certificate of Competency as Master, Chief Mate, or Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch.
- For Deck Trainees
- Deck trainees who have completed the minimum required sea service to appear for the Certificate of Competency as Second Mate [FG] or NWKO (NCV), and have successfully completed the following Directorate General of Shipping-approved courses:
- Radar Observer Simulator Course (ROSC)
- Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA)
- Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS)
- Medical Fitness
- Must be medically fit as per the International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.
- A medical fitness certificate from an approved doctor is required.
- Vision and hearing should meet the required standards.
- E Learning Requirements
- As per DG Shipping Guidelines, candidates can only appear for the final examination (Exit Exam/Institute Exam) after successfully completing the E-Learning Module of the course.
