BIGF Course in Delhi

The BIGF (Basic Training for Ships Using Fuels Covered under IGF Code) Course is a compulsory training program that all seafarers will undergo should they work onboard vessels that use low flashpoint fuels such as LNG.

The BIGF Course was approved by the DG Shipping and is compliant to both STCW and IMO IGF Code and focuses on many aspects related to the properties of alternative fuels, fuel distribution systems, associated hazards associated with alternative fuels, and safe operating practices associated with the use of alternative fuels. Emergency response, fire safety, occupational health and environmental protection comprise also part of the BIGF course, and ensures that all seafarers have sufficient knowledge and skill necessary to operate and work safely onboard IGF compliant vessels.

Eligibility for BIGF Course

Upon meeting several eligibility requirements, a candidate may begin training on The Basic Training for Ships Using Fuels as per the IGF Code (IGF Code – Basic) through providing proof of the following conditions: 

  1. The candidate is a current Seafarer 
  2. Completion of all STCW Basic Safety Training (VI/1) courses including PST (Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities), FPFF (Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting), EFA (Elementary First Aid) and PSSR (Personal Survival Techniques). 
  3. Provide the Directorate General of Shipping documentation showing that they have at least 6 months of sea service as a Trainee Seafarer; or that the applicant meets the criteria of Exempt Seafarer. This can be provided through a current and valid Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) and/or a Sea Service Logbook. 
  4. Completion of the e-learning portion as provided by the Directorate General of Shipping is a prerequisite to taking the final examination for this program. 
  5. All that hold a Basic or Advanced Gas Tanker Endorsement do not need to take the final exam.

BIGF Course Enrollment Requirement

To be eligible for enrolling in a BIGF Course, you must have the following documents:

  • Continuous Discharge Certificate.
  • Passport that is valid.
  • The following PST STCW Basic Safety Training Certificates: Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Proficient in Lifeboats/Rafts/Emergency Boat Training.
  • PST Course Completion Certificate for STCW Basic Safety Training.
  • Medical Fitness Certificate.
  • A number of required passport photos.
  • INDOS Number (Indian Seafarers Only).
