BIGF Course in Mumbai

All Marine Personnel on Ocean-going vessels that operate on Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) will be required to complete the BIGF (Basic Course for Ships Using Fuels Covered by the IGF Code) Course. This course has been examined and formally approved by Indian Directorate General of Shipping, and is according to STCW and IMO IGF Code standards. Seafarers are taught about the various aspects associated with using low flashpoint fuels such as: How fuels are physically composed; How they are stored and the dangers associated with storing them; How to operate vessels (while utilizing)LNG; Responding in an Emergency on board an Ocean-going vessel; Fire Safety; Health related to the use of alternative fuels; and Protection of the Environment while using alternative fuels. As part of the BIGF Course, seafarers will be able to acquire the knowledge and develop the skills necessary to operate a Marine Facility using Low Flashpoint Fuels in a safe and efficient manner while complying with the IGF Code.

Eligibility for BIGF Course

There are several eligibility requirements that must be fulfilled by a candidate before they can attend The Basic Training on Ships Utilizing Fuels as Covered by the IGF Code (IGF Code – Basic).

The candidate is required to fulfill the following conditions in order to become eligible to take that course:

The applicant shall be a Seafarer.

  • The applicant shall have completed all STCW Basic Safety Training (VI/1) courses (PST, FPFF, EFA and PSSR).
  • The applicant shall have Documentation of their record at sea in the form of an up to date continuous discharge certificate(CDC) or a sea service logbook indicating that they have worked as either; a Trainee Seafarer; or Exempt Seafarer. 
  • In addition, an applicant must complete the e-learning component as provided by the Directorate General of shipping before he/she may take a final exam.
  • In addition to the above, all those that have a Basic or Advanced Gas Tanker Endorsement are not required to take a final exam in accordance with the guidelines of DG Shipping.

BIGF Course Enrollment Requirement

  • Valid Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC).
  • Valid Passport.
  • PST Certificate (STCW Basic Safety Training): Personal Survival Techniques-Certificate of Completion, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting-Certificate of Completion, Elementary First Aid-Certificate of Completion, Proficient in Lifeboats/Rafts/Emergency Boat Training-Certificate of Completion.
  • Course Completion Certificate for PST (STCW Basic Safety Training).
  • Certificate of Medical Fitness.
  • Number of required Passport Photos.
  • INDOS Number (only for Indian Seafarers).
