Advanced Training in Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations (CHEMCO or ATCCO/ATCTCO) is an essential and advanced training program for senior officers with primary responsibilities for chemical cargo on chemical tankers. It is mandated by the STCW Convention, in Section V/1-1, and aims to develop actual operational skills as well as knowledge.
The primary purpose of the CHEMCO course is to give the officer practical and theoretical training in how to handle chemical cargo that may be corrosive, toxic, flammable, explosive, and/or reactive. The course covers the risks associated with chemical cargoes, the equipment used to load/discharge cargoes, and the procedures for tank cleaning, loading, discharging, and emergency response.

Eligibility for CHEMCO/ATTCO Course
The following requirements must be met; as CHEMCO is defined as an “Advanced Course” as set out below :
Basic Tanker Course (Mandatory) – a “Basic Oil & Chemical Tanker Training” Certificate – must have been obtained prior to commencement of this course.
Sea Service – (Main Requirement) – The requirement is that you have a minimum of three 3 months of approved sea service on a Chemical Tanker.
Alternative to 3 months of Sea Service and also allow for consideration based on: if you don’t meet the above three (3) month service requirements, you may still qualify if you can provide documented evidence of the following:
- Time as a supernumerary on-board one or more Chemical Tankers for a minimum of 1 month.
- Documented evidence of at least three (3) Loading and three (3) Unloading Operations on at least one of those vessels, based on your time at sea.
Medical Fitness Certification – (Mandatory) – You will need to provide evidence of your medical fitness with a valid DG Shipping approved Medical Certificate. You will also need to meet the eyesight and hearing requirements established for that function.

- INDoS Number/INDoS Certificate
- Valid Medical Fitness Certificate from a DG Shipping Approved Doctor
- Prerequisite Course Completion (as required)
- CTFC, OCTCO as per chosen course
- CDC + Sea Time Documentation
- Discharge Letter/Company Letter/Sea Time Letter
Note: If you have provided both your sea service time and all certificates in your Seafarer Profile you may not need to carry additional documentation.
