CHEMCO, also known as ATCCO/ATCTCO, is the acronym for Advanced Training in Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations. It is an obligatory advanced training for senior officers who are directly responsible for handling chemical cargo on chemical tankers. The training is covered under the STCW Convention, under Regulation V/1-1. The aim of this training is to develop actual operational skills, and not just theoretical knowledge.
The primary objective of CHEMCO is to train officers on how to handle chemical cargo that may be corrosive, toxic, flammable, or highly reactive. The topic includes the risks associated with the cargo, the equipment used, and the procedures followed during loading, discharging, tank cleaning, and emergency operations.

Eligibility for CHEMCO/ATTCO Course
Because CHEMCO is an “Advanced” course, you are required to fulfill the following requirements:
1) Basic Tanker Course (Must)
You must already have a Basic Oil & Chemical Tanker Training certificate – BTOCTO / OCTCO.
2) Sea Service (Main requirement)
Minimum 3 months of approved sea service on a Chemical Tanker is required.
3) Alternative option (if you don’t have 3 months)
You can still qualify if you have:
- Minimum 1 month onboard training as a supernumerary (extra), and
- Proof of at least 3 loading + 3 unloading operations during that period.
4) Medical Fitness (Compulsory)
- You must be medically fit
- DG Shipping-approved medical certificate is required.
- Eyesight and hearing should meet the required standards.

- OCTCO or CTFC Certificate (D.G.Shipping Approved)
- CDC with a proof of sea service
- If the sea service and the certificate details are updated on the Seafarer Profile, then the seafarer profile can be submitted.
