MEO Class 4 Description

The Meo Class 4 is a very important exam for trainee marine engineers who want to become a 4th engineer, after which the seafarer officially becomes an engineer. The process from engine cadet to 4th engineer or gp rating to engineer is very crucial and very confusing. Advance Courses for MEO Class 4

To apply for the Class 4 CoC, there is no such thing as MEO Class 4 preparatory course.  However, you do need to appear for STCW Advanced Courses to be eligible to apply for the MEO Class 4 Written and Oral Exams. Let’s check out the Advanced STCW Courses you need to appear for the MEO Class 4.

E - Pariksha MEO Class 4

What is E-Pariksha for MEO Class 4? E-Pariksha is short for electronic examination. It is a Computer based testing platform which is used to conduct MEO Class class 4 E-Learning and assessment. To attend the MEO Class 4 Assessment you need to complete a particular hour of E-Learning and get at least 70% in the assessment to pass the exam. Here’s the complete breakdown of the subjects and marks required. 

If you wish to complete EKS (Steam) then minimum course hours required will be 218 hours.

You can also attend your MEO Class 4 E – Learning written assessment with the e – pariksha portal from E-Governance. For that you need to log in with your ID and Password and then apply for the assessment from the Examination Section from E- Governance.

MEO Class 4 Exams

MEO Class 4 exams are divided into 2 categories: MEO Class 4 Written and Oral Exams. 

MEO Class 4 Written Exams: You can apply and attend the class 4 written exams from the examination section in E-Governance. 

MEO Class 4 Oral Exams: For class 4 CoC Orals, you need to visit the MMD and attend the Class 4 Orals.

MEO Class 4 Written Exams Subjects

To clear the MEO Class 4 you need to clear all of the 6 written exams which are mentioned below:

  • Marine Electro Technology
  • Marine Engineering Knowledge (General)
  • Ship Construction and Stability
  • Ship Safety and Environment Protection
  • Marine Engineering Knowledge (Motor)
  • Marine Engineering Practices

Each subject usually carries 60 marks, with a minimum pass percentage of 70% (42/60).

MEO Class 4 Orals

The MEO Class IV Oral Exam is the final test to get your Marine Engineer Officer (Class IV) Certificate of Competency (CoC). After passing the written exam (E-Pariksha), you must pass the oral exam conducted by Mercantile Marine Departments (MMD).

This exam checks your practical knowledge and ability to handle real-world situations as a Fourth Engineer Officer on a ship.

MEO Class 4 Oral Exams Subjects

MEO Class 4 oral exams generally has 4 subjects which are:

  • Marine Engineering at the Operational Level
  • Electrical, Electronics & Control at Operational Level
  • Controlling the Operation of the Ship and caring for Personnel Onboard at Operational Level
  • Maintenance & Repair at the Operational Level.

MEO Class 4 Syllabus

The MEO Class 4 syllabus is divided into 2 parts, Part A and Part B

Part A: For seafarers who have not completed GME or B.Tech Marine Engineering such as Rating who want to become a 4th engineer. This section is mandatory for rating applying for Class 4 CoC while GME and B.tech Cadets drop out of this section. 

Part B: For seafarers who have undergone courses like GME or B.Tech Marine Engineering. 

Part A: For Non-GME/B.Tech Candidates

  1. Applied Mechanics
    • Understanding the principles of forces, motion, and material strength.
  2. Heat Engines
    • Focus on thermodynamics, engines, and power generation.
  3. Mathematics
    • Mathematical concepts used in marine engineering, including calculations, formulas, and applied problem-solving.
  4. Engineering Drawing
    • Basics of engineering drawings, including interpretation, design, and schematics.

Part B: Compulsory for All Candidates

  1. Part B is required for all candidates, including those who have completed GME or B.Tech Marine Engineering. It consists of 10 papers in total, with 6 written papers and 4 oral exams

      • Covers both motor and steam engineering, including engines, turbines, and other machinery systems.

    4. Ship Construction & Stability
      • Knowledge of ship design, hull structure, and stability calculations.
    5. Ship Safety & Environmental Protection
      • Covers safety measures, pollution control, emergency protocols, and environmental regulations on board.

    Oral Examinations (4)

    1. Function 3: Controlling Ship Operations & Care for Persons on Board
      • Operational procedures for controlling ship functions and ensuring the safety of crew members.
    2. Function 4B: Marine Engineering at the Operational Level
      • Practical knowledge of engine operation, maintenance, and system control in real-world scenarios.
    3. Function 5: Electronics & Control Engineering at the Operational Level
      • Focuses on shipboard electronic systems, automation, and control mechanisms.
    4. Function 6: Maintenance & Repair at the Operational Level
      • Expertise in diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing shipboard machinery and systems. 

    If you haven’t sailed on a vessel with a boiler, such as an offshore vessel, you must complete a 6-day Marine Boiler & Steam Engineering Course at the operational level.
