ERS Course Description:
The Engine Room Simulators – Operational Level – MEO CLASS IV (ERS) course is a 3-day (21 hours) covers the training recommended in the lMO Model course 2.07 and fulfills the simulator training requirement for Engineering officers at the operational level, specified in Table A-llu1 of STCW Code as amended, to provide knowledge and Skills related to operation, supervising and monitoring the safe operation and control of ship, machinery.
Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of:
- Familiarization with the use of instrumentation and controls used in the engine rooms of modern merchant ships.
- An awareness of the need for proper pre. planning, the use of checklists, and of the limescale involved in starting up propulsion plant machinery
- Experience in identifying operational problems and troubleshooting.
- The ability to make logical decision making which promotes operational safety.
The trainee who completes this course will have gained experience in running, operation, and maintenance of engine-room machinery under various conditions and will make a more effective contribution to the engine-room team during normal and emergencies.

Eligibility for ERS Course
To attend the ERS Course, you need to clear all of the points mentioned below.
- Successful completion of DG Shipping approved Pre-sea engineering course as per Training, Examination and Assessment Program (TEAP) Part A Flow Diagram lll/1.
- Minimum of 6 months sea time in a manned engine room or periodically unmanned engine room on a seagoing ship powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW or more as a first assistant to the Engineer Officer in charge of the watch.

ERS Course Details
The ERS course equips seafarers with the essential knowledge and skills required for handling engine room watchkeeping onboard ships as an operational engineer. The training covers:
- Lists the machinery and associated systems and equipment which form the simulated plant as: tanks, valves, pipe systems, pumps, heat exchangers, oil treatment plant, line filters, electric generators, steam generators, main propulsion unit, local controls, distant controls.
- Describes how the machinery and associated systems and equipment are arranged and linked together to form the plant and compile a block diagram illustrating.
- Compares the block diagram with the mimic diagram.
- Describes the alarms that are used to indicate malfunctions and faults.
- States that the machinery units forming the plant can be controlled
- States that the safe practices must always be used when preparing machinery units and associated systems for start-up and operation.
- General Procedures, Auxiliary units, and systems, Diesel-driven generator, Steam boiler, Steam driven turbo generator, Main propulsion diesel engine, establish the normal running mode and observe operating conditions.
- Taking over and accepting an engineering watch.
- Main propulsion unit operating at full power.
