The Ship Maneuvering Simulator (SMS)is a mandatory 5-day course is aimed to covers the training recommended in the IMO Model Course 1.22 and fulfills the training requirement for Navigating officers at the Management Level, specified in Table A-II/2 of STCW Code 1995 and Appendix M-II/3B of META Manual Vol 2, concerning maneuvering and handling a ship in various conditions and establishing good team work during Bridge Watchkeeping.
Eligibility for Ship Maneuvering Simulator (SMS) Course
To attend the Ship Maneuvering Simulator (SMS) Course, you need to clear all of the points mentioned below:-
- Chief Mate (F.G.) Certificate of Competency or Mate (H.T.) Certificate of Competency and sea-service of at least
- 18 months as a certified watch-keeping officer.

The trainee who successfully completes this course will have gained experienced in handling ships under various conditions and will make a more effective contribution to the bridge team during ship maneuvering in normal and emergency situations. in particular, trainees will gain:
- Familiarization with the use of engines and helm for ship maneuvering.
- An understanding of the effects on the behaviour of the ship of wind, current shallow water, banks and narrow channels and condition of loading.
- A greater awareness of the importance of planning in passage or manoeuvre and the need for an alternative plan,
- A greater understanding and awareness of efficient bridge procedures and bridge teamwork during watchkeeping and ship handling, in normal and in emergencies,
- A greater awareness and understanding of a good interactive communication style and benefit of building up a common shared mental model of the planned passage.
