HV-M Course Description:
The High Voltage Safety and Switchgear– Management Level Course (HV-M) is a mandatory 5-day program. The training requirement in the enhancement of the competency in High Voltage Safety and Switch Gear for the Management Level Engineer Officers, as per STCW Regulation III/2, – Chief and Second Engineer Officers and Regulation III/6 – Electro-technical officers are to be trained to work with high voltage installations on board merchant ships. This course is designed to educate and train management-level officers and Electrical Officers on high-voltage systems.
Eligibility for HV-M Course
To attend the HV-M Course, you need to clear all of the points mentioned below.
- Required Eligibility for HV-M Course
- To attend the HV-O Course, you must clear all the points mentioned below.
- Marine Engineering officers holding as a minimum:
- a MEO Class IV (FG / NCV) certificate of competency and has completed a minimum of 12 months sea going service as a certificated Engineer Officer of watch OR
- a MEO Class I/ II (FG / NCV) certificate of competency OR
- a Dredge Grade I/ II certificate of competency
- Electro-technical officers holding, as a minimum,
- a Certificate of Competency as “Electro-Technical Officer” issued by the Govt. of India; OR
- a certificate of course completion, having completed an approved ETO Pre-sea training course and has completed approved seagoing service to be eligible for appearing for ETO Certificate of Competency examination; OR
- a record of sea-going service of not less than 12 months in the capacity of ETO/ Electrical Officer/trainee E/O to be eligible for appearing ETO Certification of Competency Examination.
- E-Learning Requirement
- As per DG Shipping Guidelines, candidates can only appear for the final examination (Exit Exam/Institute Exam) after completing the E-Learning Module of the course.
Documents Required for HV-M Course
To apply for the HV-M course, you need a list of documents such as:
- INDoS Id
- A valid COC,
- A valid CDC with proof of 12 months sea time
- Valid Medicals by a D.G. Shipping Approved Doctor (Click here for the list of DGS Approved Doctors)
- A valid passport

- Satisfy the requirements of STCW 2010 and reach a higher competence level in safety awareness and technical competence.
- To increase knowledge levels on various standards about safe working practices on High voltage systems.
- Work on various specialized components and equipment used in high-voltage installations.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot high voltage installations safely and efficiently.
- Understand and eliminate accident probability on high-voltage systems.
- Understand system layout and distribution arrangements.
- Know the procedure of issuing permits and sanctions to test, etc.

1. E-Learning Requirements for HV-M Exit Exam
- Minimum Study Hours: 18 hours
- Passing Marks: 70%
2. Steps to Complete E-Learning:
- Visit the DG Shipping website and access the e-learning portal.
- Click on Modular Courses, enroll in HV-M, and log in with face verification.
- Complete the required e-learning hours and attempt the assessment exam.
- Upon passing, candidates become eligible for 6-day classroom training at a DG Shipping-approved MTI.
- After classroom training, candidates must take the Exit Exam on the DG Shipping website.
3. HV-M Exit Exam Details
- Total Questions: 30
- Duration: 30 minutes
- Passing Marks: 15
- Marks per Question: 1
- Mandatory to Attempt: All questions
